Fishing report/BLOG

4/29/10

      Sorry, once again for not getting reports posted more often , but we have been very busy trying to get the Clone Series of Designer Bass FROGs ready for market. We had to start a new company Designer Fishing Lures LLC. I will not be selling the Clone Series retail here on this website. I will be wholesaling them to other dealers. But, I will post a List of Dealers where you can buy them. I will continue making & selling the Original & Replicant Series of FROGs here.

Meanwhile, check out this email from Rebecca Bailley in Tennessee - - - -

Ken,    OK, so you are not going to believe this!! We got the frog in the mail.....gave him a name (Lee-Roy).....kept it stored properly........took it out for the first time to our favorite fishing hole......got quite a few hits on it....until a beast emerged from the water....took Lee-Roy straight down and snapped 50 pound test braided line.........a moment of silence for Lee-Roy.........CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!?? Well now my husband (Redd Reynolds) is devastated. Never even got to catch a fish on him. Soooo..... I would like to order another one!! The same kind because apparently the fish up here love them. The golden spotted leopard from the Replicant Series. I have seen on your site that you are trying to make a cheaper version....when will those be available to order?? thanks again!!     Rebecca Bailley, Tennessee

Fare well.................. Lee-Roy !   He went down like a real Designer Bass FROG - - - with his Legs on and Kicking !

A Hero . In the meantime, here's another first time user with a different outcome.

Ken,   Caught this egg-laden lunker (8lb 1oz) in a 26 acre lake/pond ( Austin Texas) in 6 feet of water during my first attempt at using your frog. Surprisingly, there was no floating vegatation but a great deal of submerged vegetation a foot below the water line. She hit like a tank and fought like a banshee! Good times! also caught a nice 3.5 lb during same outing. Frogman for life!       Kent Kirkpatrick

Finally! The weather has gotten up to its seasonal normal temperatures. The constant subnormal temperatures of this past winter have broken their pattern. There's plenty of good topwater FROG fishing available. Unfortunately, the spawning season is nearing it's end, but there will be a few weeks left, and some aggressive fish will be still guarding fry. So, there's still some vicious strikes waiting out there with warmer temperatures to help them happen. And going forward, we have a bunch of hungry bass that will have to be fed after a long cold spawning season. So, I think the outlook for topwater FROG fishing is very good for late spring to early summer. In addition, the water level is up everywwhere in the lakes & ponds. So, there is much more flooded acreage & the bass will have to work harder for their food. We will also have to work harder to find them, but they will provide some entertaining attacks on the FROGs to secure their meals before they get away in the vegetation.

2/24/10

This has been the coldest winter in Florida that I can remember. In 1984, the bitter cold killed off many orange groves, but it was not that consistently cold through the winter like this year has been since Christmas. But I have caught a lot of bigger bass on soft plastic worms. First, by concentrating on the spring fed areas of rivers & lakes where the constant 70 degree water warms the environment.  And later, in spawning areas where the fish are trying to  move onto the beds. Some even have eggs to guard and remain there through the cold weather. On the few warmer days, they do even strike the surface for a few hours during the warmest part of the day. But most of the time, this year, you'll get more fish by letting a plastic worm drop down near their bedding areas. But I will trade five big bass on a plastic worm for one big bass on a FROG any day. Usually for good FROG action, you want at least 3 days in a row over 70 degrees. I think we've only had one time where we had two days in a row over 70 degrees this season.

Big Bass stalks the FROG Then Attacks on the second presentation

Warm fronts have only been in the 60's and most often its been in the 40's & 50's for daytime highs. Nevertheless, I got a lot of bigger bass on plastic worms since Christmas.  I haven't had chance to post any yet, in part, because I would rather be FROG fishing. I will post some of those worm bass on the Recent Kayak Fishing Link on the Left Border if you want to see them (when I get  a chance). Most of the fish were caught on 4-6 lb line. I think you will find some of the rainstorms I've paddled through just as entertaining as the fishing. There is no drought in Florida this year ! And even with all of the cold and excuses, if you are tougher than me, you can stick it out with the FROG and catch a big one on the FROG like I did this week in the video above. But timing is everything !

I am very excited to tell you that we have a new FROGman who is going to share his experiences and knowledge gained fishing the FROGs in ---------- South Africa !

"As any passionate FROG fisherman would understand, Once you receive a FROG from Capt Ken, then families, work & other priorities take a bit of a back stance and your blood only boils for one thing and one thing only, and that is to introduce your FROG’s to your favourite bassing location. "

2/4/10

I would like to announce a new Series of FROGs. At many customers' request, we have started the Signature Series Designer Bass FROGs. We have many customers who are collectors of the FROGs, and I have beenn asked to sign and date the FROGs. So, to make them even more valuable as a collectors item, I have started a database for this Series of FROGs. They will be signed and dated, but they will also be registered in a database and recorded as to FROG # ,species, species # , ownner, creation date, Name of FROG, and in the case of repititious names --- the names will be numbered also. These will be my highest quality FROGs available. The work on the "eyes" will be especially notable, as they will be better quality than I did in my taxidermy business for 25 years. But don't worry --- these FROGs will still be very tough and fully fishable --- but painful to lose !  You will cry like a baby !

Belly signature Web.jpg (17605 bytes)       Eye closeup Web.jpg (21880 bytes)

Florida water temperatures are improving. You can hit fish on plastic worms, but the  topwater strikes are a little lame. There have been some FROG short strikes in the lakes outside the 70 degree springwater rivers, but not serious enough to get hooked yet. All we need is a couple days in a row of daytime highs over 70 degrees without a coldfront. I may be addicted to the "Skitter Legs," and I may not be fishing slow enough. It takes discipline sometimes.

Israel 2-3-10 Bass Web.jpg (29242 bytes)

Fortunately, Israel Maldonado in California still has my back covered. He nailed another Big Bass on another of his FROGs. This time he hit on his Replicant Series Brown Pickerel FROG. Israel was using the standard "Kicking" Legs.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1/29/10
Sorry for the lack of updates. But it has been too cold for FROG fishing in Florida so far. Its been so consistently cold since Christmas that I have been fishing Spring Creeks on my day off with small slider worms. I have had some great fishing due to the constant 70 degrees in the spring water. Theres been a lot of nice fish up to 6 pounds which is a tremendous experience in a small clear creek where you can see everything. In many cases, you can sight fish and spot your fish before casting as the fish hold in feeding lanes in the current --- just like trout in a stream. But, I am anxious to get back to business with the big fish on FROGs.
Fortunately, I've had some FROGmen now to back me up while I wait on warmer weather. Israel Maldonado is one of those FROGmen backing me up. He was extremely anxious to get his FROGs. As just about all of you have been, but he went right out and caught this beautiful bass immediately after receiving it. I can't wait to see what he catches next ! Great job Israel !
Israek 1-4-2010 Web #2.jpg (31326 bytes)
Thanks Ken,
I caught this bass on the morning of January 14th in Pinto Lake, CA-a lake surrounded by vegetation. I used my Original Series light green colored frog for this great catch...gotta go...out fishing to catch some more.... Israel
12/18/09
The bass below would have been the biggest bass I've caught on the Skitter Legs". Although I didn't get him, I did get a great battle on video. And I got something I've been trying to show the FROG Folks for a long time --- a very, very big bass jumping completely out of the water to grab a FROG lure. It is what really keeps me FROG fishing. It was a disappointing loss because I think the bass was in the teens & may even be my biggest bass on a FROG lure. The video does not do the bass's size justice. But even though the bass got off on a jump, there was a great victory in capturing on video what a big bass will sometimes do to get one of these FROGs.
12/9/09
The bass have slowed down the FROG bite a little due to much cooler water temperatures now as some winter coldfronts are setting in regularly. But although there are not so many bass striking throughout the day, you can still catch a big one on a FROG during the smaller windows of feeding behaviour during the day. The big bass below was caught when I noticed several bass in a row following FROGs with the "Skitter Legs" in clear water. I quickly switched back to the standard Detailed Natural kicking legs and worked the the FROG fast & noisey over top of the clear water & dollar pads, making a lot of commotion on the wind blown surface. This bass struck the FROG in the middle of the day out in the warm sunshine shortly after switching the legs. He struck right next to the kayak, and we had a close quarters battle on a short line due to a lot of hydrilla & eel grass jungle just below the surface. I got the whole thing on video, and we will be adding it to our new instructional video series The Bass FROG Video Chronicles which will be a new addition to this website and our new website for the FROGs ------   www.Bass-FROG.com
Many folks who have orderd an Original Series - Dark Articulated Bull FROG will recognize the one below on the right from our Hatchery. It was the original. It went out to FROGman - Chad Hoover. Chad was one of the first FROGmen. In his first season, Chad had caught hundreds of bass on it, including the monster below in Virginia. Chad is one of us --- a FROG Fishing Fanatic !! Now that Chad's new book has been released, his photos are available to share with us.
I used to say that there was no shortcut to fishing success. I was wrong. Chad has done an outstanding job of laying out the sport forr those who are new to bass, new to kayaking, or new to both. I never fish without a "plan". This book will help you to formulate your plan ---  right the first time. That's a shortcut. Start here. You can also get help from Chad & his friends at KayakBassFishing.com
11/18/09
Sorry we are a little late with the updates. We have been very busy getting the packaging for the Clone Series perfected. Also we've been working on some new leg designs for the FROGs. The new "SKITTER Legs"  were responsible for the bass caught in the photo on 11/2/09 and also the bass in the photo below caught on Lake George on the St John's River on 11/18/09. The legs are not actually "new" to me anyway. But, I have hesitated to share them in the past because the standard "kicking legs" will catch you bigger fish. But if you want to "buzz" your FROG, and catch "lots of bass" of all sizes, this style of legs will allow you to really cover a lot of water. You can fish them at any speed, and they are effective on bass of all sizes when fished still, twitching, diving, and "buzzing" . They will allow you to FROG fish even when you need to cover a lot of water fast.
11 18 09 Skitter Bass #3.jpg (50635 bytes)
Video Capture Photo: Bass caught 11/18/09 on Clone Series: FROG #3 with "Skitter  Legs".
I actually shot some nice video demonstrations of the legs in action, including the bass from the photos on 11/2/09 amd 11/18/09 --- and many others. I will make those videos available online as soon as I can. They will be available in several "actions". You can get them now for Original & Replicant Series, and we are also having them developed specificly for the Clone Series also.
11/2/09
The heat of summer has finally ended, and the fish are really responding, especially in the rivers like the St. John's and Lake George (2nd biggest lake in Florida) connected to the River. The vegetation is also back in good condition, and the bass are grabbing FROGs fished fast across the top of any matted type of plant material. It should be great fishing on the warm fronts until the real cold weather gets here after Christmas. This is a chance to catch lots of qualiity fish on topwater FROGs, and maybe even a trophy.
Check out this bass that FROGman Chris Burke just caught out of this FROG Heaven in a Maryland State Park creek.   Chris has been fishing the FROG in Maryland for almost a year now, and he has been very consistent at catching bigger bass on the FROG all year. The day he caught this bass, he also caught about 40 more, and he kept on catching them under a full moon that night until the mosquitoes drove him off the water. Chris has a large selection of Designer Bass FROGs, but he caught this one on a Golden Pickerel FROG. Check out Chris's FROGman Page and all the other FROGmen who have done fantastic with the FROGs this year. Many of them have gone out and caught their personal best bass with their FROGs in the first season, and many of them on their first trip with a new FROG.
The lakes are very slow, but you can catch a few, especially just before dark, and I got another one just after dark. But the previous four hours I cast a variety of lures for four hours out in the hot sun , catching only a small bass on a Banjo Minnow. However, I knew where I had to be with the FROG just befoore dark. Apparently, it was an appointment. This bass quietly followed the FROG out of the padfield and into open water. His nose quietly broke the calm surface as he quietly but solidly seized the FROG. He had only submerged about a foot, and sat there near the kayak munching the FROG  when I  set the hook very close to the kayak. I didn't have a clue he was that big, and he didn't have a clue I was there. A very nice battle. FROG fished quietly on a hot quiet evening.
I took a break from fishing the FROG to make some improvements on another lure that I have been making & fishing for many years. The temperatures are easing just a bit from summer highs, and the lakes are very slow, but the action in the rivers and lakes along the rivers is pretty good.
The FROGs are fighting the good fight in Vermont. Now, you all can follow the adventures of "Team SharkBait" as they make the transition from "live bait frog fishermen," who formerly prowled the shores of many Vermont lakes & ponds to capture live frogs to fish with, into a crack team of FROGmen.
These guys are "hardcore". and they have discovered Capt Ken's Designer Bass FROGs.
      Keary Mattison has been a gourmet collector of my FROGs since I started to sell them. He is about the same age that I was when I started to make them, and he is just as enthusiastic about them as I am. He was one of my first FROGmen. In addition to big bass, he also catches some big pike, and he doesn't let the harsh winters up there stop him from fishing even through the ice. He is off to a great start fishing the FROG for some awsome bass. Check out this Lake Champlain beast he caught fishing along an offshore weedline.
Hey Ken,
I fish the lake Champlain waters outside of crown point in new york I fish along the weed line about 80 to 90 feet off shore.  I use the northern pickerel frog you made and it has been working great the fish love it.
Most are around 1 1/2 to 3 lbs they are smaller up here then down there but i got lucky and landed a nice 5 lbs 11 oz monster large mouth.
I've sent some pictures to show you and others how well they work.
I have some good news, and more good news.
The GOOD NEWS--- Once the Bass FROG Clones are available (very soon), there will be no more waiting for that Series of FROGs. You will not have to wait for me to make one. They will be available immediately. And I will continue making the Replicant & Original Series FROGs, because I like doing it. Also, I like the stories and photos of the bass you are catching on them. Very soon we will begin to post your photos, stories, articles and tips on FROG fishing with CaptKen's Designer Bass FROGs.
MORE GOOD NEWS---We are working on a new website dedicated just to the FROGs which will have many more features and much more help and information on FROG Fishing. We will also add some new features just for fun !
In spite of the appearance of good fishing represented by the big bass from the report on 7/9/09 and this new big fish caught on the FROGs, the fishing has not generally been good. The water temperatures are very elevated - - - often holding at 89-91 degrees. However, when there are thunderstorms, and especially rain to cool the shallows, the bass do tend to bite much better. But several days without rain turns them off almost completely. On several trips last week, I caught a dozen bass, including that big bass on 7/9/09. But this week its been tough to catch even small bass on any lures you try. The big bass below was the only fish to hit that day after many hours of casting. Several small thunderstorms passed on either side of the lake about an hour before dark, inspiring the big fish to move shallow where she met my FROG for an evening snack. I was testing the new Clone Series Legs again, but this time I tried them on one of my Original Series FROGs. She put out a monstrous wake coming for the FROG. Hungry, I guess. The new Clone Legs are awsome.
Okay, we are getting very close to releasing the Clone Series of Capt Ken Daubert's Designer Bass FROGs. Both pictures below feature the FROG #1 : Light Green Pickerel FROG. The new package below gives a very good view of the all important LEGs. We worked all year to produce this new style of LEGs. It has the best action of any style of Legs that I have ever produced, and I have designed hundreds of styles. And as you can see from the photo of the Big Bass caught on 7/9/09 by CaptKen , the Legs can be given any style of markings such as "bars" or "spots" that you want for that day. If applied the night before fishing with various colors of Permanent Marking Pens, they will last all day before fading, and fresh new and different markings can be applied for the next day's fishing.
Would you tie on the FROGs below to cast for big bass ? Perry Barber & Chris Burke both did. Perry tried this Bubble Gum Tree FROG on the left below for the first time and nailed a 9 pound bass from his kayak in a North Carolina pond. I sent it to Perry to try after Chris Burke had a bass of approximately 10 pounds right up to his kayak on his first try with his Splendid Leaf FROG, pictured below on the right. Chris's bass got off while he reached for his lip gripping tool, but he has caught bass over 7 pounds on the FROG before, and has caught 8 lb bass on other lures. So, he knows what a ten pounder looks like ---- even in his home state of Maryland.
I would like everyone to know that the Cloned Series of affordable Bass FROGs are nearly ready for the market. They are due out this summer. You can get a preveiw of them on the Cloned Series of Bass FROGs webpage. Some of the legs are substituted while they are still in development. Let us know which FROGs you would purchase in a tackle shop when available. We value your input.
Well, the bass were safe from me for most of the month as I got out only a couple times this month. I was too busy making little FROGGIES, but I do enjoy making them and hearing all of the stories about folks that are catching fish on them. I did finally get out on Wednesday the 27th to make the acquaintance of these two beauties below. I also hit several more almost as large on soft plastics, and ended up catching quite a few fish. It was a good day. I have to get out more!
Burke Bass 5 10 09 Web.jpg (26450 bytes)
This beautiful bass caught on 5/10/09 by Chris Burke on the FROG in a Maryland pond.
hey ken im fishing in a shallow pond with hydrilla growing to about a foot under the waterline. the bass sit at the top of the grass right under the waterline. i can see them most of the time. one of the problems i am having is i know im missing my chance at the bigger, smarter bass but when i cast the frog past them the power pro hitting the water scares them off. nothing worse than seeing them swim off with a big wake in thier path. another thing ive been meaning to tell you is that you have changed my fishing a great deal in your video you talk about 'watching the wake' i used to watch the line for strikes keeping my eyes off of the bait, what a bad habit that was no telling how many fish i misssed not watching for the wake.
yeah I've been using 8 foot fluero leader it really helps with the frog diving I didn't use one last year I get alot more action with the leader. I do have your bass DVD. How much are the hi def pickeral frogs?
     Thanks     Chris
I would like to announce a whole new series of Designer Bass FROGs. These new FROGs are the same bodies, but they have a totally different type of coloration and markings. They are a kind of very detailed "High Definition" FROG design. They have incredible detailed markings. There are a few already made up and available for sale with no waiting for me to make them. So far they are available in various shades of Pickerel and Spotted Leopard FROGs. Keep your eye on the HATCHERY for more photos.
We now have three different series of FROGs. We have the Originals, the Replicants, and the Clones. The Clones are not yet available, but they will probably be ready this summer. The Originals and the Replicants are handmade entirely by me personally, and the Clones are being mass produced in China.
Well, I got stuck indoors for the whole month of April. I was too busy making FROGs for a bunch of guys who were trapped indoors all winter and were suffering from severe symptoms of "Cabin Fever". But I finally escaped today, and I ran straight into a large concentration of spawning bluegills (brim).
hey ken its chris burke i got a chance to get out and swim the frogs today, while the bass where still on bed. caught a couple of nice ones! i also got my camera set up, thank god. i wanted to try the frog on my baitcaster, i like it alot better than on my spinning rod. i caught the bigger one while trying to pick out a backlash, the frog was right by the kayak the bass grabbed it and went straight down he held on long enough for me to finish fixing the backlash and reel in the mile of slack, it was crazy. that bass knew that frog was real, 'he was wrong"  i know the bass in the pics are not as big as yours but they're not bad for here. talk to you soon.       chris burke
This monster bass gobbled that Golden Southern Leopard FROG, and it is showing the signs of a late stage spawning season. I got the whole thing on video. I will post it soon. It should give all the FROGmen out there some confidence. It was the only fish that day.
Okay, Okay, I'll get back to making " your" FROGs !!!
3 27 09 Monster Bass.jpg (78662 bytes)
This 28" plus Monster Bass caught on 3/27/09 on the FROG. It was probably over 12 lbs and should have been much heavier, but was post-spawn.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Okay, check it out in High Definition. It looks much better that way, and try it Full Screen also. Should give some inspiration and confidence in the FROGs.

Not just another FROG Lure !

3/25/09

The big bass is showing the signs of a late stage spawning season. they are very aggressive at this stage because they are usually protecting small fry. Eventually, they often turn on their own fry which actually helps because the ever present predators keep picking them off until they finally disperse and take their chances on their own.

The bigger bass continue to smash topwater FROGs as the weather continues warm and cloudy through the tail end of this spawning season. Not much time left in spawning season. Most of the bass will be done in the first two weeks of April. So, we've got about 2-3 weeks to go. Then they will continue blasting FROGs on their normal feeding periods, especially into late spring and early summer. As the weather warms up even more, days with rain showers will be especially productive.

The change in the weather contiues to improve with higher humidities and more cloud cover throughout the day. And the weather continues to be warm. The bass have already been spawning---so they are in the shallows --- and they are now hungry and responding bigtime to topwater lures, especially the bigger fish that can't resist a FROG Lure.

I escaped for a few hours to swim the FROG again. It was a slow start for the FROG this season due to all of the extreme cold over the winter. The bass just didn't want to respond to topwaters. And when it warmed up, it was all high pressure and blue bird skies with no humidity--- not good FROGGIN weather ---even though the bass were spawning. But finally, there's a change in the wind, and you don't need a worm on the bottom to get your bigger bass.

1/15/ 09 Update

Check out some recent video action I shot to demonstrate some nice strikes on the FROGs. I hate shooting video, and I especially hate to stop fishing to take still photos. But, I do love to show off the fun and excitement of FROG fishing, especially from a kayak

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Check out my new Bass FROG video. It shows a big bass that attacks my FROG three times before getting hooked. But, he doesn't dive down, creating slack line, and instead he explodes at the surface, straightening the hook and gets away. Nice quiet evening encounter with a big one. Very typical of the kinds of experiences you get with these FROGs.
Make sure you push up the YOUTUBE volume dial to hear the Bass "suck in" the FROG on the 3rd strike.
You can view a higher quality video setting if you"select" it on YouTube.
12/26/08 Update
Even with all of the warm weather before and after Christmas and after throwing the FROG all afternoon, I finally got this Mama just ten minutes before dark. It was the only strike. Sometimes it's just plain persistance and confidence in your lure that pays off big. I doubt that I would have caught many---if any other bass even if I threw some soft plastic worms.
12/15/08 Update
I escaped for a few hours to swim the FROG in a small pond. Got this nice beauty right out in the bright sunshine and nice bunch of other good size bass. The strikes were very aggressive and loud on this day. Also got the whole thing on video, including the strikes. When I get a chance, I'll post the video.
12/6/08 Update
Finally had a chance to get out fishing myself. Its been very cold for so early in the season. We have been getting back to back cold fronts. But I escaped for a few hours on Saturday when a southwest wind brought in some warmth and a little bit of cloud cover.
100_0546  8 in copy.jpg (35037 bytes)
I got these two bass and lost a bigger one that broke off a hook just behind the barb. I was testing a smaller size #1 Matzuo Shiner hook (they are very sharp) on one of my new
CaptKen Daubert's Bass FROG..... Clones
But in that size at least, the extra penetration was not worth the result. I have used larger sizes with good results. That was the first broken hook in that brand. After that I went back to the tried and true 1/0 Mustad #37140 with the rubber band weed guard and got these two nice bass and caught about a half dozen assorted lesser sized bass.
100_0552 copy 8 in.jpg (41868 bytes)
The bass this day appeared to be sunning themselves near the surface on this dramaticly warming day of mixed warm sunshine and cloud cover. They were very spooky and cautious. Sometimes hitting the FROG lightly, then returning to gobble it as it appeared to be escaping in the pads.
11/14/08 Update
Well, enough about the fish I catch on the FROGs. It is time to start highlighting the fish caught by some folks who bought my FROGs. Even though winter is moving in up north, Chris Burke managed to catch this bass last Sunday on 11/09/08. The daytime high temperature was only 56 degrees !!!!
wpe2D.jpg (14459 bytes)       wpe2E.jpg (24962 bytes)
Hey Ken,
Its Chris Burke from Maryland. I finally got to use the FROGs I bought from you today, and all I have to say is, "WOW". The bass don't just hit these things. They eat them. I used to love those Spro frogs, but they sink so you have to fish them soo fast and you get a lot of "hits" off them in the summer time but when the fish hits--- it immediately spits it. Another thing with the Spro frogs, the fish tend to go airborne. I guess because they are moving soo fast. With your FROGs, they grab it and go straight to the bottom. Its amazing. I can't wait till next spring when their really hitting top water. And if you have some time Ken I have a couple of questions about mounting a fishfinder to my Malibu X13.
Thanks,
Chris Burke
9/21/08 Update
I haven't had a chance to update since the storms dropped all the rain that we really needed for the lakes to make a comeback from drought like conditions. You may remember from my post below back in June and July that the low water conditions were beginning to hurt the fishing conditions. The storms dropped enough rain to completely restore the inland lakes and ponds and they will probably begin a new cycle of fish population increases. The fish will be spread out for awhile on the high water, but they will grow quickly and reproduce greatly. The future looks good and the lakes themselves now look great!
Both fish caught on 9/21/08
The St Johns River and Lake George are still out of their banks, but the fishing is great where you can find weed beds in  the shallowest water --- which is now pretty deep for Lake George. Hopefully, the high water will not stay up too long or it could threaten to kill off all the beautiful grass beds again as it did a few years back after all of the hurricanes.
Big Bass 9 21 08-15.jpg (50894 bytes)
Meanwhile the fishing is fabulous as you can see from the two fish in the photos from Sunday. There was non-stop action, and I'm sure I sacrificed something bigger to stop and take pictures during such a hot feeding binge as the bigger bass were blasting the mullet in the reeds behind me.
7/2/08 Update
I haven't had chance to fish for a couple weeks. We had a wedding for my youngest daughter, and then I had a nasty flu virus to get over. But finally back on thw water I found the fishing very slow even with ultra light tackle and finesse baits. So, I gave up just trying to catch fish and decided to go down swinging for a big one.  I put the FROG on, hoping to get one more fish ------ and to make it a big one. An approaching thunderstorm with clouds and rain helped the cause and in ten minutes this fish below charged out of the reeds & lily pads
to plunger the FROG.
6/17/08 Update
This bruiser bass surprised me by hitting in the middle of the day with very little cloud cover and no approaching thunderstorms that day --- which just goes to show that there is always hope and that the best time to fish is------ whenever you can! But as you can see behind me, the water is getting very low, and it's getting tougher to find good lily pads and other weedcover in deeper water.
6/16/08 Update
We finally have started to get some afternoon thunderstorms with rain and lots of beautiful clouds. The cloud cover and fast dropping barometer is creating some some great feeding activity in the middle of the day. On the left below, this nice looking bass took a Banjo Minnow on a light rod with 6 lb test monofilament on the outer grass edge just in front of an approaching thunderstorm. And the bass on the right took that FROG in the lily pads just before dark. It was a really big hit and a teriffic battle on the FROG bass. Plenty of other nice size bass were hitting throughout the  cloudy day.
5/13/08 Update
The constant high pressures, bright sunshine, and dry air finally gave way to some humiudity and cloud cover, but still no rain. But the improvement in weatherfronts was enough to catch this beauty. The fishing was fantastic on the St John's River & Lake George for a few days while the winds switched to the southwest as a front came through........... but "dry" again. The dry weather has caused quite a few brush fires in Florida. The sunshine has been so persistent that even smoke from nearby brushfires can block the sun and cause the fish to "turn on". Last year, on May 2nd, I caught a bigger bass over ten pounds on the FROG when a distant wildfire blocked the sun for a couple hours in the afternoon & dropped ashes on the water which excited the fish for awhile as they were interpreting the ashes as an insect hatch. I spent most of April fishing with a 5 weight flyrod because the "bite" was so lite with all of the high pressure. Two years ago in May I caught a 12 pound bass with the 5 weight fly rod and a small slider popper when we were also suffering with long term high pressure systems. If you can't get out on the few good weather fronts (cloudy, humid weather), fishing with finesse baits on fly rods or spinniunmg tackle will be fun, catch you a lot of fish and sometimes even a big one. This fish below came from that open pocket of water just behind me.
We've lost our cloud cover for awhile anyway (big high pressuremoved in) and a surprise late season cold front will hit next week. I guess we'll have to get some work done. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The FROG strikes again. In the final   minutes of light on a rainy, warm front, evening, this bass couldn't resist the FROG even though it was right on the quarter moon when they are usually less responsive. This photo light has been brightness enhanced . It was actually darker out than it appears. The next photo was taken with a flash.
Monday evening was the new moon, and it was very good to me. If this isn't my biggest bass ever, it is a close second. I am especially excited about it because it hit one of my FROG Lures, and I got it in my kayak. I can't describe to you the thrill of a sleigh through the lily pads hooked up to a bass of this caliber leaping into the air and scaring the hell out of me. This Bass was over   29 inches long and very solidly built. I've pulled a lot of 10 and 12 pounders into my kayak,  which is always a thrill, but a bass like this on your lap is shocking. It took a lot of discipline to calm down and take the pictures and take good care of her for a healthy release. That ring floating on the water is my kayak fish resuscitator. It has a net below that allows the fish to rest in the water while I get my camera ready. She was very healthy on the release. By the way. I am very close to offering the FROGS for sale on the website soon. They are tthe best way to get a big bass. Even better than big golden shiners.
Getting lucky with the rainstorms. As a bonus there nhasn't been much lightening either. Had a chhance to get out and fish the FROGS on some prairie ponds. The big bass are always waiting for a shot at those FROGS, especially if its rainy, cloudy, or evening.
There was a lull in the bass fishing action through most of the month of August due to the lack of rain or cloudy weather. There were some fish in the evening for about a half hour before dark. But then on Aug 31st,  we got some nice rain showers and cloud cover. I hit two fish about 10 lbs in the same day on the FROGS. Took some lousy pictures with the cell phone again. Then Tuesday night Sept 11th. I hit the fish pictured below just before dark on one of the FROGS.   Oh yeah------  got a new camera !
The floating basket in the picture above is a great item to use to keep your catch alive for a release. You can let the fish sit in there as long as you like while you get your camera ready for a pictu re. They will revive completely as long as the water is not muddy. It works great in saltwater for reds & trout also . It would also be a great help to photo & release kayak tournament anglers. For more info on the basket CLICK HERE.
Big bass in the lakes & ponds this year are keeping me from reaching the coast. I hit my biggest fish of the year so far this evening on one of my homemade frog lures. Incredible experience from a kayak. It's been a season full of big bass and this year the Frog has been responsible for most of them. I haven't been carrying a camera with me because I'm kind of burned out on photography after making all the videos. I just want to fish. Anyway, I did take a photo with my cell phone. I wish my arm was longer so I could show you a little more of the fish with me holding it. I don't know what this fish would have weighed
because it was released alive. But, based on experience, it was well over 12 pounds.
These pictures turned out surprisingly well for a cell phone. I took a few cell phone pictures of some fish earlier in the season. I'll see if I can post those also.
